Certain formations have slots that are troop-specific, marked with a symbol. For example, the first 'Strategist Formation' you unlock has a strategist-only slot, denoted by a fan symbol.
Do note that the cavalry's horse symbol means that a slot can be filled by both spear and sword cavalry.
